This weekend I spent making music with some of my favorite people which was an absolute treat. It is an annual gathering where we all come ‘home’, in a sense, from our various corners of the world to return to where we came from and be reminded of what that feels like. In my conversations with various folks I came to realize that there were two types of people in our group, those who are living their dreams and making it work financially and those who are working for money and waiting for it to begin. And of course many of us (myself included) lay somewhere in the middle.
Which one are you? Are you living your dreams creating your art or passion? Do you know what that passion is? What are you willing to sacrifice for it? Many of my friends make music in some form or another though few of them have left the security of their jobs in order to fully live their dream. Do you know which of your favorite artists have quit their ‘day jobs’?
Frank Turner whom I have mentioned here before is one who immediately springs to mind as a ‘full-timer’ he doesn’t even have a home to go back to he lives entirely on the road. Bette & Wallet are a fabulous duo hailing from Eastern Canada who brilliantly combine their passions for music and art with their home life and touring by recording and producing their first album entirely at-home. They are genuinely kind-hearted and beautiful people so you should give them a listen and support them.
A couple years ago I wrote an article about a local band called We Are the City and I said ‘these guys are sure to be the next big thing’. Now I don’t want to say I told you so but they recently won the Peak Performance Project. After two years of living on macaroni and cheerios, several get your fans to pitch in and help us so we can make music campaigns and living in one of their parents basement their sacrifice paid off. These guys deserved every penny. Their talent is unmistakable, their joy contagious and appreciation heartfelt.
As I write this I realize my topic was poorly researched because aside from the folks I mentioned above I don’t know enough about the personal lives of my favorite or newly discovered artists to tell you much about their living situations. And so… until next week.
