My schedule has changed and I now work on Mondays instead of Thursdays which means hooray! New Music Monday can live on. For those of you unfamiliar with this weekly wonder I will share with you some links, stories, names and other goodies that have come up in my world of music in the last week.
And without further ado….
First up my very good friend and the most talented musician in this town I call home Kris Ruston just recorded a new single with ALiVE, one of his many, many projects. You can listen to it on their facebook page here. Scroll down and check the sidebar for the music player.
There is a nifty little breakfast joint here called Hello Toast! Not known for being a music venue they are hosting what is sure to be a lovely little do here this Thursday and I get to go! Vancouver artistbehind Sapphire is a duo, no a trio, wait there is a whole band. Truth is you never really know who you are going to get but can be sure Grant Caswell and Matthew Mazankowski will be there with their talented friends. The music is somewhere between folk, pop and acoustic though doesn’t really fall into any of these. You can have a listen at Behind Sapphire’s MySpace page and find out when they’ll be in a town near you!
And I’ll be missing the volunteer after-party for my favorite festival which will be attended by OKA one of my new favorite Australian artists. The group (and they are quite a group) describes their music as “a fusion of eclectic world sounds, roots, dub, reggae, jazz and organic electronica”. And their new favourite description comes from a fan in Canada (yay Canada): “techno-folk-aboriginal-jungle-hippie-rock?” Ha! Love it. Their flute player is just stupidly amazing. The sounds that come out of the little piece of wood with blow your mind. If you get the chance this summer be sure to check them out.
On the subject of missing acts… Summer being what it is there is another festival nearby this weekend though I won’t be attending as it is my weekend ‘on-duty’. Of the many great performances I am sad to miss Mishka is at the top of my list. This guy is the next ‘Jack Johnson’ folks. His folk-reggae sound is fun, easy and light hearted while his lyrics discuss some pretty thoughtful topics. He’s cute and bearded to boot. Have a listen folks because this guy is the next big thing.
Well that is what is first and foremost in my musical thoughts these days. My kids are loving the Lake of Stew album we picked up last week and I am loving Library Voices.
