I posted this in a Facebook group to inspire some conversation on the subject. The arts are being threatened with all sorts of cutbacks in my country for some strange reason people put little value on it. They forget that without artists their lives would be far duller. Art inspires, it entertains, it encourages and nourishes the very essence of what is human in us. We are unique because we can experience and appreciate art in all it’s forms.

Throughout ancient and to an extent modern history artists may have been forgotten but their work lives on. In some cases it is our best insight into the inner workings of that society. Periods and timelines are often distinguished by their art. Historically great works of art were reserved for the wealthy however even peasants frequently owned relics (often of a deity) that were crafted by an artisan. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the things I love about my house is that there is no cell service inside it. You have to go into the driveway to get service. We discovered it when the house was inspected. When I went to pay their little wireless terminal didn’t work in the house we had to go out to the truck.

I don’t own a cell phone. Never have. People ask me why not. One of my friends argued that I had to have one to carry on in my line of work. Truth is I spend enough time staring at a screen as it is. When I am out in the world I want to be just that, in the world, not looking down at a tiny screen trying to decipher a cryptic text message. Read the rest of this entry »

Art is what makes us human. It defines us as unique from the rest of the animal kingdom because we can conceptualize and contemplate something that another has created. Art inspires us, it reminds us of our vulnerability and our own mortality. It stirs our emotions and stokes the fires of our hearts to continue, to endure, to have compassion, to be kind. Around this time of year many communities now celebrate Seedy Saturday a local exchange of seeds collected by backyard gardeners and small scale farmers. Only a few short years ago I remember Seed Saturday being a tiny gathering that likely meant a long day cooped up in some tiny community hall (the packing house in my hometown) with grandmothers who gardened to save on the grocery bill before it was the ‘in’ thing to do. Today it’s a highly publicized, busy event that hosts workshops, demonstrations and seeds from all sorts of people.

It is encouraging to say the least. Sort of. Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight we all lose an hour of sleep, the groundhog saw his shadow and I got a notice in my mailbox yesterday that said it was time to clean up my yard all of which point to one very exciting fact: spring is in the air.
And as I go through my notebook and review the list of goals I sought to accomplish I am pleased to be able to put a great big checkmark next to most of those things. On to the outdoor goal list.

Living in a trailer park I realize that it is going to be even more difficult to push the boundaries than if I were in your average subdivision or even back at my great little place downtown. Read the rest of this entry »

While this is completely unrelated to anything this dog is quite possibly the cutest dog I have ever seen.

I’m not really a dog person per say, definitely lean towards the cat end of the spectrum but there are some dogs that you just have to like. I suspect this might be one of them.

Recently my kids have been on my case to get a dog which is frustrating a little because I want them to be on my case to get a goat! Not really the same thing. I figure if you are gonna keep a pet it may as well be useful.

That said there are studies out there which suggest that owning a dog is good for the soul. That families that own dogs have lower rates of, well basically all the bad stuff that happens in families they keep statistics for.

Being that I am always keen to do things that will make my family happy and of those things a dog seems pretty benign I’ve actually been considering it. If the kids ever manage to convince me to get a dog it might look something like this one.
