Lawns

Until today I used to be able to say that I had never mowed a lawn in my life. And that would be a completely true statement. I grew up on a farm where mowing the ‘lawn’ consisted of getting a horse or pony and a book and laying out on the grass for a couple hours. As an adult either I lived somewhere that didn’t have a lawn to maintain or someone else took…

Dry clothes forever for $40 and some time

I finally did it. I hung a clothesline. I now have a 40ft made mostly by nature clothes dryer and it cost me $40 whole dollars. It was surprisingly easy to hang also granted I had some help. First we screwed in two hooks to studs coming off the house and the garage one of said studs was high up so there was some precarious ladder climbing involved. We thread the wire through each of…

We have done terrible things I have committed heinous crimes We all want to be held & told it will all be alright Lines blur & are crossed Wars waged are then lost Our eyes are straining to see Our hearts know the true cost. We have lost our way…

Save Trees Cancel Your Phonebook

When was the last time you looked in a phone book? Ok I did this week but honestly I could have just as easily looked online. Every year thousands of phonebooks are printed, trucked to doorsteps and discarded or never used. Until we can manage to convince the publishing companies to make recieving a phone book a request based system do the opposite and request to NOT get yours. The InfoTel book – stop sending…

Reduce and Reuse

Freecycle is quite possibly one of the greatest sites going in that it connects the local community in a way that is completely unique – everything is FREE. Post what you want or what you have and someone from your community or better yet your neighbourhood will come and get it if they can make use of it! Recently my partner and I moved in together and have done a big renovation (highlights include: high…

Some great thoughts on Shampoo and Conditioner!

This comment was posted at the bottom of an article I read recently about eco-friendly shampoos. I have long bought shampoo and conditioner in bulk and I think I’ve only bought two bottles of conditioner in my adult life. I have recently been trying to brainstorm a more natural solution to the supermarket no-name brands and I dug this girls comments: I have been using the system below for the last year and am very…

Earthship Darfield

Someone near us is building an earthship and they want you to come and see what they are doing! If you have seen the movie ‘The Garbage Warrior‘ then you know what the heck I am talking about. If you haven’t the movie begs the question what do beer cans, car tires and water bottles have in common? Not much unless you’re renegade architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for…

Calling BS on Recycling

Penn and Teller had this wonderful program called BullShit! Sorry if that offends but that’s the name! They called Bullshit on recycling which was incredibly eye opening and SO true. Check it out here. So before you happily and blissfully throw all your ‘recyclables’ into that blue lidded bin think twice about where that yogurt container is going and what you want your sustainable solution to be. Check out these 5 recycling myths And these…

Outdoor furniture

Currently I have been pondering this situation as there is going to be an acquisition soon regarding the furniture that will go outdoors on our new deck. Actually three decks so there is some serious thinking to be done. New is not an option. There just isn’t something out there that I am going to spend money on to support. Something sustainable that would last. What about iron? Steel and iron furniture will last generations…

Working with Water

Here in Kamloops we have a state of the art water treatment facility. We are located amongst three large river arteries. Access to clean water is in abundance. But it is also ridiculously wasteful. The amount of water some toilets flush is what a person in Africa would use to bathe, eat and drink in a day. If you are a contractor or have knowledge regarding water recycling, heating and collection in your home please…
